Good Vibrations

It’s the vibe of it.

In my meditation group it was suggested that chanting AUM at least twice a day would make a huge difference. Not just personally, but for changing the energy of our world in its current state. Many are unhappy, probably most and for all different reasons.

Last week’s blog was about finding the joy of the season year ‘round. This week’s message is about how to help that feeling along. The sound of AUM (from which Amen appears in our language) is considered the universal sound. It is the sound often heard from the microphones recording in deep space.  It is created by simply saying the word with an open mouth and then slowly closing your mouth while continuing the sound. It seems hard but is quite easy.

Earlier today a snippet of a lecture by Joseph Campbell showed up on Facebook. He was teaching a class, most likely at Sarah Lawrence and it was about ancient culture and rituals. In it he explained that all sound is made by two things striking such as a hand on a guitar, keys in a piano or your vocal cords. AUM, however, does not require that two things strike together, but rather vibrate. In my perception it was not a coincidence this clip showed up today.

The instruction during meditation was that by saying/chanting/expressing the AUM sound you cause your vagus nerve as well as other cells in your body to vibrate in a way that is calming and healing. The promise is that this practice every day for the next week would result in some positive results. One of which was to help the planet change its vibration from the tensions, worries, anxieties and anger that seem to be the prevalent mood.

It takes less than a minute each day. You can do it in the shower, the car, at your desk, as you fall asleep or out in public. Sounds pretty easy.

I’m in. How about you?
